Minneapolis,
Lake Harriet Home
Here is a great example of a beautiful
one hundred year old home that suffered from poorly constructed
additions and remodeling projects during the previous decades. After
demolition, a new structure was created to accommodate a chef’s
kitchen and great room that flowed in perfect harmony with this
century old arts and crafts home. The key to this project was to
build and design a new space with all the modern amenities and yet
appear to have always been there. This was achieved with custom
milled woodwork, hardwood floors and architectural details that
were precisely duplicated with the old house. The use of white maple
cabinets, lightly stained cherry island, and dark granite united
with hand-made tile result in a gorgeous combination of sophistication
and warmth.

A well preserved turn of the century home lacking curb
appeal and architectural charm was completely transformed with this
unique craftsman wrap-around porch addition. The timbers were made
by a quaint mill in northern Wisconsin with each post and beam notched
and chiseled on sight, fitting together like a giant jig-saw puzzle.
This rare method of craftsmanship has been lost in the past, but
the result is an incredibly solid structure that shows no signs
of modern building techniques with out-of-place steel bolts, brackets
or engineered lumber. A cobble-stone sidewalk and retaining wall
were added to complete the look.

Hopkins Home
This 1903 original farmhouse more than doubled in size
with a new addition. The greatest challenge was to combine a completely
new structure with a turn-of-the century building into a seamless
custom built home. With an outstanding design and careful attention
to architectural detail there is no visible transition from “new”
to old. The use of natural materials on the exterior, like stone
porch columns and cedar shakes combined with lap siding give the
house a classic cottage look yet maintain the home’s history.
The interior features of this home are endless. Brazilian cherry
floors were laid throughout the entire house, a custom kitchen with
granite and butcher block tops, stainless appliances, second story
laundry and a luxurious spa like master suite with a slate walk-in
shower are just to name a few.

The worn out existing oak cabinets were salvaged with new
paint as this outdated 1960’s kitchen was transformed into
a fresh contemporary cottage style on a very tight budget. New birch
cabinet doors and drawers replaced the old ones. Beautiful tile
work and granite counters made a dramatic improvement. A custom
movable island with a built-in wine rack and blown glass lighting
complete the transformation.

Tumbled marble mosaic floor tiles and subway tile were
used in this 1908 arts and crafts bungalow to create a timeless
style that is true to the period. A storage cabinet was custom built
to perfectly replicate a very detailed original medicine cabinet
the customer wanted to preserve. New “craftsman style”
windows were installed to keep all those tiles warm during the harsh
Minnesota winters.

Using hidden modern laminated beam
technology to bolster the structural integrity of this home allows
for a more open floor plan to capitalize on natural sunlight and
views of Lake Harriet. Hand hewn site built corbels compliment a
new portico roof addition at the main entrance with custom stone
columns and steps to finish it off.

We transformed a 1950’s 1 ½ story home by opening up
the kitchen and updating it. We gave the client more cabinet storage
and countertop space along with creating a custom high end look.
We installed new custom cabinets, new Hanstone countertops, recessed
can lights, under-cabinet lighting, and all new appliances. We also
remodeled the main floor bathroom. It had outdated pink tile and
no shower. We completely remodeled the bath and added new custom
tile with a built-in nook and updated it with a new shower, custom
cabinets.

Who says you can’t divide 3 into 1? Client bought 3 adjoining
apartments in 1890’s Elliot Brownstone, which were converted
into 1 multi-level Tuscan style living space spanning 2 floors.
Featuring custom cabinets, hand hammered copper sink and range hood,
stone arch work, floating modern staircase, and laid brazilian teak
flooring, and French doors opening on the new lant-levered composite
deck.

The client purchased on outdated 1970’s split level home in
need of major renovation. We focused on opening up the space; vaulting
the ceilings, moving the living room, moving the kitchen to the
living room’s former location, and adding a new bath where
the kitchen once was.
On the second level we created a luxurious master suite by combining
2 small bathrooms into one large master bath with custom travertine
tile, a steam shower, Jacuzzi tub, and maple cabinets.

Front porch transformation brings the 1890’s into the 21st
Century. Using hidden modern laminated beam technology to bolster
the structural integrity of this home allows for a more open flowing
floor plan to capitalize on natural sunlight and Lake Harriet views.
Hand hewn, site built korbels compliment a new gable roof addition
to the main entrance with custom stone stairs and columns to finish
the look.
